| MP ‘queries’ on India’s decision to impose KD700 bank guarantee |

KUWAIT CITY : MP Kamel Al- Awadhi has forwarded questions to First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Sabah Al-Khaled Al-Sabah on the decision of the Indian Embassy to impose KD 700 bank guarantee on Kuwaitis who wish to hire domestic helpers (maids) from India, reports Al- Seyassah daily.
In a recent press statement, Al-Awadhi pointed out the Parliament disagreed with the decision as it goes against global practices. He asserted Kuwait is a country of institutions and is governed by the law, so all the rights of individuals are safeguarded by the Constitution.
He said the laws pertaining to this issue oblige the Domestic Workers Bureau to pay a guarantee of about KD 20,000 to secure the rights of domestic workers, indicating Kuwait is signatory to global and regional pacts being implemented in this regard.
He added that, according to the Indian Embassy, the decision was circulated to 17 countries, among them Kuwait and all GCC countries; but he knows the GCC countries have rejected the decision due to the fact that it infringes the sovereignty of the State.
He asked the minister about the ministry’s stand on the issue, which authority is in charge of resolving disputes between the sponsor and the domestic worker, and if it is permissible for the Indian Embassy to be the arbitrator in such disputes.
He also inquired if there is any coordination among the GCC countries to take a unified stand towards this decision by rejecting it, and if there was any coordination between the Foreign Ministry and Indian Embassy before the decision was announced.
